Gum disease

Gum disease is not just an adult issue. Gingivitis, the earliest stage of gum disease, is very common in children and teenagers.

Gingivitis can cause the gums to become red, swollen, and more likely to bleed. With regular brushing, flossing, and professional cleanings, it is usually preventable and treatable. If not addressed, it can lead to more serious gum problems.

In rare cases, more aggressive forms of gum disease can develop in adolescents and young adults and may affect the bone supporting the teeth.

At regular dental visits, we monitor your child’s gum health and may recommend more frequent cleanings to help control inflammation and support long-term oral health. More frequent visits may be helpful for:

  • children with braces or other orthodontic appliances
  • children with poor oral hygiene
  • patients with special health care needs
